In recent years, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has made strides in cultivating talent with vocational skills.
Since the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), Guiyang's human resources and social security departments have provided 102,400 skills-training opportunities.
The city has turned vocational skill competitions like "Skill Star" and "Jiaxiu Craftsman" into recognized local brands, providing platforms for talents to demonstrate their superb skills while sending the cream of the crop to various national and provincial skill competitions.
In recent years, more than 300 Jiaxiu craftsmen and 97 skilled experts have been selected, and over 1.1 million yuan ($154,410.41) in bonuses have been awarded for skill-related competitions.
Also, a series of policies and measures have been rolled out. One-time subsidies of 50,000 yuan and 30,000 yuan will be given to highly skilled talent who win a "China Skills Award" or "National Technical Expert" accolade, respectively.
Meanwhile, one-time subsidies of 2 million yuan, 1 million yuan, 200,000 yuan or 100,000 yuan will be given to approved national and provincial-level highly skilled talent training bases and approved national and provincial skill master studios, respectively.
So far, Guiyang has established six national highly skilled talent training bases, 10 provincial highly skilled talent training bases, 17 national skill master studios, and 37 provincial skill master studios.
